The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) have formed an electoral alliance for the 2026 [1] Azad Kashmir elections.
The partnership comes amid a growing conflict over the timing of the vote, which could shift the balance of power in the region if the schedule is altered.
While the PPP focuses on its new coalition, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has accused the party of attempting to postpone the election. On May 21, 2026 [2], the PML-N alleged that the PPP was seeking a delay to gain a strategic advantage.
"PPP is trying to manipulate the election timetable to its advantage," Shahid Khaqan Abbasi (PML-N) said [2].
The PPP has denied these allegations, framing its alliance with the JUI-F as a move toward electoral integrity. The party said that the partnership is intended to ensure the process remains transparent, and equitable.
"Our alliance with JUI-F is aimed at ensuring a free and fair election in Azad Kashmir," Bilawal Bhutto Zardari (PPP AJK president) said [1].
The Election Commission of Azad Jammu and Kashmir remains the central authority for the scheduling of the vote. However, the public row between the PPP and PML-N suggests a volatile political climate as the 2026 [1] cycle approaches.
Reports of the scheduling dispute continued through June 17, 2026 [3], as parties maneuvered for position. The PML-N maintains that any postponement of the election would constitute political manipulation, while the PPP continues to consolidate its partnership with the JUI-F to strengthen its candidate pool.
“"PPP is trying to manipulate the election timetable to its advantage,"”
The friction between the PPP and PML-N over the election timetable indicates a struggle for tactical timing. By aligning with the JUI-F, the PPP is attempting to broaden its base of support, while the PML-N's opposition to delays suggests they believe the current political climate favors their own candidates. The outcome depends on whether the Election Commission adheres to the original schedule or yields to pressure for a postponement.
