Ontario public health officials confirmed a dead crow tested positive for West Nile virus [1].

Reports of the infection surfaced in early June and were highlighted again on Aug. 6 [2, 4]. While some reports place the discovery in southwestern Ontario near Guelph, others identify the location as northeastern Ontario [1, 3]. Public health officials have not released the exact location of the bird [1].

An Ontario public health official said, "This is the first positive bird test in the region since 2024" [3]. The last local bird case was recorded in 2024 [3].

Despite the discovery in the avian population, no human cases had been reported in the region as of June 2 [3]. Health officials said that most people infected show no symptoms, though some may experience fever, aches, or rash [1].

To mitigate risk, a spokesperson for the Ontario Ministry of Health said, "Residents should eliminate standing water and use insect repellent to reduce mosquito bites" [2].
