Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport in Bhogapuram, Andhra Pradesh, on Saturday.
The new aviation hub is intended to catalyze economic growth and expand opportunities for youth across Andhra and North Andhra. By expanding connectivity, the government aims to integrate the region more deeply into national and international trade networks.
Located in the Vizianagaram district, the project cost ₹5,640 crore [1]. The facility is designed with an annual passenger handling capacity of six million passengers [3]. The airport is named in honor of Alluri Sitarama Raju, a prominent freedom fighter, to preserve his legacy for future generations [4].
During the ceremony, Modi said the infrastructure is a critical step for the region's development. "This airport is the runway for the growth of Andhra and North Andhra," Modi said [5].
Beyond the airport opening, the Prime Minister laid foundation stones for several additional development projects. These accompanying initiatives are valued at over ₹17,900 crore [1]. The combined investment represents a significant push toward urban and transportation infrastructure in the state.
The government said that the project is part of a broader strategy to decentralize industrial growth. By providing a high-capacity international gateway in Bhogapuram, the administration seeks to reduce the reliance on existing hubs and stimulate local business investment [4].
