The Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia (INMET) has issued a severe weather alert for a developing “ciclone bomba” targeting Brazil’s Centro-Sul region.
This meteorological event poses a significant risk to public safety and infrastructure across multiple states. The system is expected to bring a combination of heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and hail, creating hazardous conditions for millions of residents.
According to reports, the storm system is forming as a powerful cold front and polar air mass advance over the region [1, 4]. This atmospheric instability has placed at least 10 states under alert [1], including Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, and São Paulo [2, 3].
Meteorological services, including Climatempo, said extreme wind gusts could reach up to 70 km/h [3]. These winds, combined with the advancing polar front, are expected to cause a sharp drop in temperature. Some areas may see minimum temperatures fall below 10 °C [4].
The interaction between the polar air mass and the tropical moisture often results in the rapid intensification characteristic of a "bomb cyclone." This process can lead to sudden and severe weather shifts, ranging from intense rainfall to frost, over a very short period.
Local authorities are monitoring the progression of the front to coordinate emergency responses. Residents in the affected states are advised to stay informed through official channels as the system moves through the Centro-Sul region.
